Visiting Pilots
PRIOR PERMISSION to land at Portmoak is mandatory. Please call on 01592 840243.
Portmoak is usually very busy with glider traffic including a high volume of low hours trainee glider pilots. It is not a suitable environment for power pilots who are not familiar with glider operations. It is quite possible that your request will be refused if the club is busy with gliding activity. After obtaining prior permission, please also make a radio call to Portmoak Base on 129.975 about 5 minutes out.

Please note that Portmoak does not have an information service and that the radio and telephone are likely to be answered by inexperienced personnel. We are not able to provide reliable weather information to callers.

The airfield is quite rough in many areas and pilots are advised to exercise extreme caution whilst taxiing as well as during takeoff and landing. It is extremely inadvisable to land at Portmoak without studying the airfield map.

Circuits
All Power Circuits are recommended to be flown to the South of the Airfield. The recommended Power Circuit Procedure is shown on the downloadable map.

In a West wind, descend over Loch Leven to the West of St. Serf's Island.

Join downwind to the South of the airfield at 1000ft QFE as shown on the map, descending on base leg to land on the North Field. Using this procedure will in most cases keep you above glider traffic in the circuit. Keeping a good lookout is essential!

Radio Procedure

Broadcast your position to Portmoak Traffic on 129.975 MHz at the following circuit positions.
  1. Downwind: "Portmoak Traffic, G-XXXX, Downwind, Left (Right) hand, North Field"
  2. Turning Base Leg: "G-XX Left (Right) Base, North Field"
  3. Turning Final: "G-XX Final, North Field"

Noise
The SGC enjoys good relations with its neighbours and is anxious not to upset this harmony. Noisy aircraft should not be brought to Portmoak under any circumstances, whilst all powered aircraft are expected to arrange their arrival and departure patterns to avoid over flying the villages of Scotlandwell and Kinnesswood. Wherever possible, routing should also avoid the smaller farmsteads and hamlets in the area.

Booking In/Out & Landing Fees
Upon arrival, pilots should book in using the movements log kept in the corridor outside the main clubhouse office. Landing fees must be placed in the night safe under the office window and the aircraft booked out prior to departure. An administration fee of £20 will be added if it is necessary to invoice the aircraft owner for unpaid landing fees.
