The Pawnee Tug

The SGC tug, G-BSTH, is a Piper Pawnee with a six cylinder 235hp engine which is recognised as one of the best general purpose glider tugs. One of the design goals of this aircraft was as a crop sprayer and the SGC machine spent many years doing this before we aquired it. Features of the design are a relatively low flying speed and general ruggedness for lifting the heavy weights involved in spraying. Together with its ready availability, straightforward maintenance and ample power these features make it an almost ideal glider towplane.
The Pawnee has sufficient power to get airborne in a very short distance towing even our heaviest glider in quite adverse conditions, and its acceleration enables aileron control to be gained after only a few yards of ground-run. Together with its high rate of climb this makes for a very safe towing combination.
